Paralegal

The Paralegal Diploma program provides students with the requisite legal knowledge, combined with office administration skills to succeed in as a paralegal in a variety of settings. In this 60-week program, students will learn about the different types of law and how they relate to work in the field. The students will also receive training in the necessary skills that will ensure they are ready to enter the job-market upon completion.

General Admission Requirements

• High School graduation or equivalent OR
• Mature Student status (19 years old before starting classes and passing English Admissions Test) OR
• Entrance Evaluation

English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements

• English 12 (or equivalent) with Grade C or higher from Canadian High School
• Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs) 7 or higher
• IELTS minimum 6 overall or higher
• TOEFL 550 score or higher
• TOEFL (iBT) 70 or higher
• Cambridge English 160 or higher
• Pearson Test of English (PTE) 59 or higher
• Duolingo English Test 95 or higher
• Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) 7 or higher

Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

• Develops general business administration skills in business correspondence, client care and employment.
• Computer skills in full Microsoft Office suite as well as keyboarding and transcription
• Develop knowledge in the following legal subject areas:
  • Knowledge of the Canadian and British Columbian legal systems
  • The court structure
  • Legal rights, privileges, and practices in legal offices
  • Family law
  • Criminal law
  • Real estate and conveyancing
  • Wills and estates
  • Corporate and business laws and regulations
  • Civil litigation
  • Insurance law
  • Business law and contracts
  • Torts
• Develop skills in legal research and interviewing
• Gain understanding of credit and collections procedures

Completion of all required courses

Minimum attendance of 80% overall is required

Passing the practicum component

• In-Class Instruction: 100% hours of instruction delivered in a classroom or other setting, where instructors share the same physical space as students.
• Distance Education: 100% hours of instruction, excluding work experience hours, if applicable, delivered remotely from a BC location.
• Combined Delivery (Both In-class and Distance): Instruction provided through a combination of in-class and distance delivery. Program may include a work experience component (in-person).

Program Duration: 1200 Hours / Full-time 60 Weeks

Homework Hours: 55 Hours

Methods of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated in each course required to complete the Program.
